Summary

Adrift after her sister Bailey's sudden death, Lennie finds herself torn between quiet, seductive Toby—Bailey's boyfriend who shares her grief—and Joe, the new boy in town who bursts with life and musical genius。 Each offers Lennie something she desperately needs。。。 though she knows if the two of them collide her whole world will explode。

Join Lennie on this heartbreaking and hilarious journey of profound sorrow and mad love, as she makes colossal mistakes and colossal discoveries, as she traipses through band rooms and forest bedrooms and ultimately right into your heart。

As much a celebration of love as a poignant portrait of loss, Lennie's struggle to sort her own melody out of the noise around her is always honest, often uproarious, and absolutely unforgettable。

I love how unapologetically messy this story is--how indeed the point is to embrace the mess of grief and love。 There were times when I didn't like anyone, but ultimately the writing is so good, I ended up loving everyone。 <3 I love how unapologetically messy this story is--how indeed the point is to embrace the mess of grief and love。 There were times when I didn't like anyone, but ultimately the writing is so good, I ended up loving everyone。 <3 。。。more

honestly, i felt obligated to read this because i loved jandy nelson’s “i’ll give you the sun。” it’s still my favorite book to date。 however, this book was very slow and the romance was odd。 nelson is known for having weird characters, but some of lennie’s decisions were very VERY weird。 i’m not sure if i can’t understand because i haven’t experienced true grief or if it was just weird, but it was a little difficult to take in。 i do love nelson’s writing style and the use of poems in the book!! honestly, i felt obligated to read this because i loved jandy nelson’s “i’ll give you the sun。” it’s still my favorite book to date。 however, this book was very slow and the romance was odd。 nelson is known for having weird characters, but some of lennie’s decisions were very VERY weird。 i’m not sure if i can’t understand because i haven’t experienced true grief or if it was just weird, but it was a little difficult to take in。 i do love nelson’s writing style and the use of poems in the book!! it’s very artistic and unique; it really helps drive certain messages :)) 。。。more

The story followed a good storyline and had great character development。 I just felt like there should’ve been more to it than there was

even if this wasn't the most stunning commentary on grief i have ever read, jandy nelson will never fail to floor me with her refreshing and entirely unique characters and writing style。 when you read her books, you become immersed in this freak world she's built of mystical grandmothers and equally unsettling and cajoling superstition。 i reccomended this to a friend of mine who said she was grossed out by the whole thing and it made her super uncomfortable。 like yeah??? that's the point。 i love even if this wasn't the most stunning commentary on grief i have ever read, jandy nelson will never fail to floor me with her refreshing and entirely unique characters and writing style。 when you read her books, you become immersed in this freak world she's built of mystical grandmothers and equally unsettling and cajoling superstition。 i reccomended this to a friend of mine who said she was grossed out by the whole thing and it made her super uncomfortable。 like yeah??? that's the point。 i love a romance novel in which there is a perfectly sound and rational explanation for every pit and fall, but this, though incorporating an epic romance, is NOT that。 grief is a fickle, unexplainable, painful thing。 the confusion as you scramble to move on but still hold on IS pretty gross and uncomfortable。 that's exactly the way this book is supposed to be。 There's Joe who makes her feel like she's soaring, who reintroduces lennie to the lennie she was before her grief sucked the life out of her。 she falls in love with life again, with music, with her hometown, and with the rain。 but then there's the guilt of not being a shell of a human, because who can do that when their sister is dead? so the way that my skin crawls and my body cringes when she kisses toby is utterly fitting。 their dynamic drags her back into the darkness, he reignites her sorrow and they pour it into each other because they don't quite no where else to put it。 they are each other's last living relics of someone they both loved so much。 sometimes when there's that much love it becomes murky what it all means。 is it wrong to steal your dead sister's boyfriend? or is it okay to find solace in someone so close to her heart? i cant do it justice in a review, but the metaphorical analysis of the progression of grief is insane and so smart and heart wrenching。 definitely reccomend。 。。。more

3。5 stars Very surprised by this considering I didn’t like her other novel。 Too bad I give it away because part of me now wants to reread it。 This story definitely had its rocky moments。 At first the writing style annoyed me but I grew to appreciate it。 Due to the subject matter I thought I’d be sobbing from page one but instead I didn’t cry until almost the very end。 The book was like a puzzle that takes ages to solve, it might seem frustrating but the pay off is worth it。 I don’t know how else 3。5 stars Very surprised by this considering I didn’t like her other novel。 Too bad I give it away because part of me now wants to reread it。 This story definitely had its rocky moments。 At first the writing style annoyed me but I grew to appreciate it。 Due to the subject matter I thought I’d be sobbing from page one but instead I didn’t cry until almost the very end。 The book was like a puzzle that takes ages to solve, it might seem frustrating but the pay off is worth it。 I don’t know how else to talk about Lennie and Bailey and Toby and Joe and Gram and Big and Sarah other than to say that I ended relating to this in ways I wouldn’t have imagined when I read that first page。 。。。more

Please keep in mind that I don’t generally read/enjoy a lot of contemporary fiction。 Having said that, there aren’t words to describe how much I LOVE this book。 Jandy Nelson, without a doubt, has an enthrallingly unique talent for descriptive phrasing。 If anything, I love this even more than I’ll Give You The Sun (many thanks to my bff for bullying me into reading it, which then led me to read this one)。 Both books deserve eleventy-billion star ratings。 I wish she’d write more。

Slightly weird yet wonderful。A good read, especially for a young adult who enjoys romance with a plot twist or two。I just love the quotes!

I heard a lot of good things about this book and it really did live up to its expectations。 I have been enjoying slice of life books, but this one told a great story and was pretty realistic。 It deals with grief in a very real way including the changes the main character goes through because of it。I thought some of the dialog was cheesy, but young love can be full of the awkward moments and words。 I really liked this book。

Super cute。 Had this for years and finally picked it up。 Quick read although took me ages cause I got so busy。 Even though Bailey is dead, the sister relationship felt so real and I think that’s why I loved it

I loved this book so much, although I found it slightly weird she was falling in love with her sisters boyfriend。 Other than that it was such a lovely story, and I can see why she'd fall in love with someone feeling the same kind of greifing as her。 I loved this book so much, although I found it slightly weird she was falling in love with her sisters boyfriend。 Other than that it was such a lovely story, and I can see why she'd fall in love with someone feeling the same kind of greifing as her。 。。。more

Very cute story dealing with the loss of a loved one, but found the details and back story to be lacking。 Can tell this book is dated, as some of the words used are “quirky”, and there are a couple offensive descriptors used。

i love the world building, and the way it covers a heavy topic like grief in such a spiritual and elegant way, but it feels so childish - and yeah, it’s a YA book - but slapping cheesy teen antics into the gracefulness of the rest of the writing knocks some points off for me。

His lust for her (and her for him) is way too much to a point that it's just pure fantasy。 It's like they went from 0 to 100 in a span of a few days and were absolutely ready to smash each other into pieces if that was the last thing they ever did in their meaningless lives。 The romance is also cliche。 Two people find true love in each other, they have some kind of fall out and finally true love prevails and the end。 That's it, that's the romance。 I also feel like the romance (which took up like the middle third - half) overshadows Lennie's grief and the grief is just sprinkled throughout like undissolvable salt。 The romance is supposed to support the grief aspect but it just seems to be pushed it aside with grief only coming back at the very end。 All in all, the romance could have been executed better if everything didn't happen as fast and it wasn't so prominent。The plot was generic。 Nothing interesting really happened, nothing out of the ordinary。 This doesn't mean that it was awful, but neither does it mean it was good。 It simply was just generic。There was a setting? Honestly, this book could have happened anywhere in the modern world。 The setting doesn't need to be entirely unique to the story, but it could have been more fleshed out。 There was a few houses, a river, woods, a school and perhaps some shops。 There really is nothing notable about it。In conclusion, it is obvious I do not like this book。 Not only were the (main) characters boring and fake, they were also tied together in a generic love plot with a sprinkling of grief on top。 Don't really recommend the book but it wouldn't hurt to try, would it? 。。。more
